The Code of Academic Integrity

1. Purpose and scope of application

1.1

This Code regulates the establishment of honest and open relationships between all subjects of the educational process, compliance with the principles and requirements of academic integrity and the University of International Business (UMB).

2. Regulatory references

2.1

The Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated July 27, 2007 .T 319-III “On Education” (with amendments and additions);

2.2

The State mandatory standard of higher Education was approved by the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated August 23, 2012 X 1080 (with amendments and additions as of October 31, 2018 N9. 604.);

2.3

The state mandatory standard of postgraduate education, approved by the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated August 23, 2012 Ns 1080 (with amendments and additions as of October 31, 2018 NX 604.);

2.4

On approval of the Standard Rules for the activities of educational organizations of appropriate types, Order of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated October 30, 2018 Ns 595.

3. General situation

3.1

The purpose of this Code is to establish honest and open relationships between all subjects of the educational process, and to comply with the principles and requirements of academic integrity.

3.2

Academic integrity is a set of values and principles that establish generally binding norms of behavior in the implementation of educational activities and the development of educational programs, including when performing written works (term papers, essays, theses, dissertations and other research papers), answers during knowledge control, expressing one’s position, in mutual relations between participants in the educational process the process, as well as during the evaluation procedure.

3.3

Participants in the educational process are students, teaching staff, administrative and administrative staff, and teaching and support staff.

3.4

The principle of academic integrity should become a meta-principle in the value system of the University of International Business, which will allow us to achieve our goals and objectives.

4. Principles of academic integrity

4.1

The purpose of this Code is to establish honest and open relationships between all subjects of the educational process, and to comply with the principles and requirements of academic integrity.

4.1.1

Conscientiousness is the honest, decent performance by students of academic and research work that is evaluated and unappreciated.

4.1.2

Observance and protection of the rights of the author and his legal successors, and other intellectual property rights — recognition of authorship and protection of works that are the object of copyright, through the correct transmission of someone else’s speech, thoughts and indication of information sources in the evaluated works.

4.1.3

Respect for the rights and freedoms of students — the right of free expression of opinions and ideas by students.

4.1.4

Equality is the duty of every student, member of the teaching staff and administrative and management personnel to comply with the rules of academic integrity and equal responsibility for their violation.

4.1.5

Truthfulness is the avoidance of deception, lies and falsification of documents in all situations.

4.1.6

Reliability is the provision of information that corresponds to reality, the conclusion of scientific statements based on facts, empirical data and objective judgments.

4.1.7

Responsibility — following the policy of academic integrity, avoiding situations that could lead to a violation of academic integrity.

4.1.8

Objectivity — making a decision based on objective data without bias and subjective attitude.

4.1.9

Fairness is ensuring strict observance of the rights and obligations of members of the academic community of the University, as well as fair consideration of violations of academic integrity.

4.1.10

Zero tolerance for violations of academic integrity – recording and reviewing each violation of academic integrity, and taking action against those who violated the measures in accordance with this Code

5. Types of violations of academic integrity

5.1

Academic misconduct is a deliberate violation of the policy of an educational institution: falsifying grades; absenteeism, tardiness and skipping classes without a valid reason; using a cell phone or other equipment during classes to listen to music and computer games.

5.2

Duplication is the presentation of the same work within the framework of different assessments and requirements, including an attempt to provide it as one’s own, partially or completely, any work that was previously provided for evaluation by another student, graduate, former student.

5.3

Unlawful access of teaching staff and staff of the educational institution to academic information and (or) its dissemination:
— transfer of answers to exam questions;
— informing students about the questions asked during the assessment;
— distribution of partial or complete material for the evaluated works without appropriate permission;
— sale or other ways to help in the purchase and/or sale of finished reports, essays, assignments, research papers, publications and other academic works;
— theft of the answers of the evaluated work by any means, including downloading via e-mail, computer, etc. in order to provide students.

5.4

Cheating is an action that bypasses the educational process in order to obtain an assessment and academic advantages, while not doing intellectual work that deserves grades.

5.4.1

Forms of deception:
— impersonating another student during the final control of knowledge;
— cheating and asking other people for help in passing knowledge control procedures;
— exchange of information during the final knowledge control.

5.5

Plagiarism is the use of other people’s words, ideas, data or product without appropriate confirmation, for example, copying someone else’s work, presenting other people’s opinions and theories as one’s own or working together on a project, and then presenting it as one’s own.

5.5.1

Non-independent performance of written work is understood as plagiarism, i.e. the use of someone else’s text in written work, published in paper or electronic form, without full reference to the source or with references, but when the volume and nature of borrowings call into question the independence of the completed work or one of its main sections.

5.5.2

Plagiarism can be carried out in two ways:
— verbatim presentation of someone else’s text;
— paraphrase — the presentation of someone else’s text with the replacement of words and expressions without changing the content of the borrowed text.

5.6

Bribery is the transfer of remuneration to teaching staff, as well as to university employees in various forms, or without transfer of remuneration from other personal interests, as well as inducement to such behavior.

5.7

Collusion is helping another commit an act of academic dishonesty, such as paying or bribing someone to get a test or assignment, take a test or complete an assignment for someone else, or letting someone do it for their own benefit. Using related or service relationships to get a higher score.

5.8

Concealment is the concealment and concealment of information about unfair performance of work and non—compliance with the norms of the Code by students or university employees.

5.9

Cheating is an attempt by a student to get help in completing written work, passing an exam, including the use of cheat sheets, electronic and other means, as well as oral prompts without the permission of the teacher (gore exam).

5.10

Falsification is the deliberate distortion or invention of any information, such as falsifying research, inventing or exaggerating data, or listing incorrect or fictitious links.

6. Rights and obligations of participants in the educational process

6.1

Participants in the educational process have the right to:

  • to familiarize yourself with this Code;
  • the right to free expression of one’s own opinion in the educational process;
  • to defend by all legal means against unjustified accusations of violating the requirements of the Code of Academic Integrity.



6.2

Responsibilities of participants in the educational process:

6.2.1

The student is obliged to :
— conscientiously treat learning and all forms of knowledge control, comply with accepted learning standards;
— to combat all types of academic dishonesty as incompatible with obtaining a high-quality and competitive education;
— strictly observe academic integrity in the performance of academic assignments and research work.

6.2.3

The teaching staff of the University is obliged to:
— possess deep, solid knowledge and possess all innovative forms of their transfer to students, showing integrity and respect in their work, recognizing the status of a student, increasing their own responsibility for compliance with the basic requirements of the Code of Academic Integrity;
– adhere to the principles of independence and objectivity in assessing students’ knowledge;
— actively conduct research and scientific activities based on an honest search for knowledge, properly ensuring evidence-based, impartial judgments and good faith in reporting results;
— to teach students intellectual honesty;
— to be a model of decency and intelligence, high morality, morality and patriotism, a principled opponent of any manifestations of corruption, indiscipline and irresponsibility;
— to show tolerance and respect for the pluralism of opinions, while being able to defend their point of view;
— to prevent any possibility of violation of the requirements established by this Code.

7. Responsibility

7.1

All subjects of the educational process of the University of International Business are responsible for violating the provisions of the Code of Academic Integrity.

7.1.1

Types of responsibility applied to the student:
1) Verbal warning;
2) cancellation of the work and/or the assessment;
3) not allowed to defend the evaluated works, including term papers, theses, dissertations;
4) public censure of the committed offense;
5) expulsion from the university.

7.2

Violation of the Code of Academic Integrity by faculty and university staff leads to disciplinary action with sanctions, which include the announcement of a remark, reprimand, severe reprimand, and for more serious violations — dismissal.

7.3

The university management and heads of departments are responsible for identifying and preventing the facts of academic dishonesty

Conclusion

This Code is mandatory for all subjects of the educational process of the University — administration, teaching staff, employees, students, and their legal representatives from the moment of approval at a meeting of the Academic Council of the University.
